Italy Appoints Career Diplomat as Space Agency Extraordinary Commissioner
Italy's Italian Space Agency (ASI) has appointed Mario Cospito, a career diplomat, as its extraordinary commissioner following the death of its president and the dissolution of its board.
## Italy's Space Agency Receives New Leadership Italy's Italian Space Agency (ASI) has undergone significant changes in its leadership structure. Following the death of its president, Teodoro Valente, and the dissolution of its board, ASI has appointed Mario Cospito as its extraordinary commissioner. Cospito, a career diplomat, brings a wealth of experience in institutional relations and diplomacy to the role. ## Background and Experience Cospito has held various senior postings throughout his career, including serving as ambassador to Romania and Moldova, and later to Sweden. After returning to Rome in early 2021, he spent a short stint at Italian rocket builder Avio as director of institutional relations. In November 2022, he joined the office of Italy's Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), Adolfo Urso, where he served as the minister's advisor for aerospace policies. ## Minister's Statement on Appointment Minister Urso has stated that Cospito's selection was based on his extensive institutional experience and in-depth knowledge of the space sector. However, Minister Urso's statement that Cospito's in-depth knowledge was developed at Avio and as a diplomatic advisor to MIMIT, amounts to around five years of direct experience in the space sector. This has raised questions about the adequacy of Cospito's experience for leading Italy's national space programme during an important phase. ## Leadership Arrangement The appointment of an extraordinary commissioner became necessary following Valente's death on 16 July. Although Vice President Elda Turco Bulgherini temporarily assumed his functions, Italian law does not provide for the vice president to automatically succeed to the presidency, leaving ASI under an uneasy leadership arrangement. With Italy holding the presidency of the European Space Agency Council as the agency prepares for a consequential Interim Council meeting at Ministerial level in December, the government likely considered that arrangement inadequate. ## Temporary Leadership Mario Cospito will retain the role of extraordinary commissioner for up to 12 months while a new president is selected. This temporary leadership arrangement is expected to provide stability to the agency during a critical period. The appointment of Cospito is seen as a necessary step to ensure the continuity of ASI's operations and to prepare for the upcoming Interim Council meeting.
