Rocket Lab Establishes German Subsidiary to Expand European Presence
Rocket Lab has established a new subsidiary in Germany to enable the company to offer scaled domestic production of satellites and launch services on both its Electron and Neutron rockets.
## Rocket Lab Expands into Germany Rocket Lab has announced the establishment of a new subsidiary in Germany, marking a significant milestone in the company's international growth. The subsidiary, Rocket Lab Germany GmbH, was formally announced on August 10, but its establishment predates this announcement by several months. According to German company records, Rocket Lab Germany GmbH was created from a pre-existing shelf company, Mondstein 694 GmbH. The shareholders approved the change of name and business purpose on March 27, with the change reflected on April 2. This was shortly before Rocket Lab completed its acquisition of the Munich-based optical communications terminal supplier Mynaric AG. Rocket Lab Germany is based in Munich, but its registered address appears to be a serviced-office location rather than a dedicated Rocket Lab facility. The company's strategy for Rocket Lab Germany focuses on three main pillars: satellite manufacturing, assured access to space, and strategic autonomy and space sovereignty. ## Satellite Manufacturing and European Expansion Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck highlighted satellite manufacturing as a central part of the company's planned European expansion during the question-and-answer portion of the company's earnings call. Beck stated that there is a real opportunity for Rocket Lab to establish a regional hub for constellation-class manufacturing as well as full-scale spacecraft assembly, integration, and test. This will enable Rocket Lab to serve commercial, civil, and defense space programs as a domestic European provider. Beck also hinted at a clear driver behind the company's decision to establish a presence in Germany and why satellite manufacturing would be a key focus. ## Launch Capacity and European Market Beck suggested that Europe's limited launch capacity could create an opening for Rocket Lab. He noted that Europe has only a couple of launch vehicles that are launching relatively infrequently, and that building whole constellations of systems might require additional launch capacity. However, it is unclear how much additional capacity Rocket Lab could realistically offer, at least initially. The company launched 21 missions aboard its small Electron rocket in 2025, with a maximum payload capacity of 300 kilograms to low Earth orbit. This would have provided a theoretical maximum annual upmass of 6,300 kilograms. In comparison, the most recent flight of the upgraded four-booster Ariane 6 launched 36 Amazon Leo satellites, carrying more than 20 tonnes to orbit on a single mission. While Neutron will be significantly more capable, with a planned payload capacity of up to 15,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, its availability will initially be limited. ## European Launch Capacity Shortage In an interview with the Financial Times published on August 10, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher warned that Europe was heading towards a shortage of launch capacity around 2030. Aschbacher stated that if Europe adds up all the satellites that need to be launched from current and planned constellations and missions, there will be a peak of launch requirements around 2029, 2030, and 2031. However, Aschbacher added that Europe is working to bridge this gap, examining ways to increase the annual launch cadence of Ariane 6 from around 10 to 15, or even 20, flights a year. A similar increase in Vega C launches is planned, as the Italian launch provider prepares to introduce Vega E before the end of the decade.
