This flight, designated VA270, is scheduled to last approximately 36 minutes from lift-off to satellite separation. According to the Arianespace newsroom, it will mark the fourth Ariane 6 launch of the year and the vehicle's first-ever mission to a geostationary transfer orbit.
The MTG-I2 Satellite Mission
MTG-I2 is the second Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite. It is part of Europe's next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite system, a program built on a long-standing partnership between ESA and EUMETSAT.
The satellite arrived in French Guiana on June 12 and is now undergoing launch preparations. Once operational, it will complete the first family of the MTG system, which Arianespace describes as the most powerful weather constellation in the world.
MTG-I2 will provide a rapid scan service over Europe every 2.5 minutes. It will work in tandem with the Meteosat-12 (MTG-I1) satellite, which was launched by an Ariane 5 in December 2022. This pairing is intended to ensure the continuity and resilience of Europe's operational weather services.
Enhanced Weather and Climate Monitoring
The Meteosat Third Generation system represents a significant technological leap. It is described as the most complex and innovative meteorological geostationary system ever built.
The fleet will eventually comprise two imaging satellites and one sounding satellite, all positioned 36,000 kilometers above Earth. The combination of innovative instruments, increased resolution, and greater sensitivity offers a major enhancement over the previous Meteosat Second Generation.
A key improvement is in the early detection and prediction of rapidly evolving, dangerous weather. The system is designed specifically for the early detection of fast-developing severe storms, aiding weather forecasting and climate monitoring.
European Collaboration and Access to Space
The MTG satellites were developed by the European Space Agency based on user requirements collected by EUMETSAT. A large consortium of European industries, led by Thales Alenia Space with main partners OHB System in Germany and Leonardo in Italy, built the hardware.
EUMETSAT develops the ground infrastructure to control the satellites, operates them throughout their lifetime, and disseminates the scientific data to users worldwide.
The Ariane 6 rocket itself is a program developed by ESA to ensure a reliable and available launch system for its member states. Arianespace states that this launch will further strengthen Europe's strategic and autonomous access to space for key institutional missions like meteorological satellites.
