China is preparing to launch a complex mission to the lunar south pole, with the aim of studying the region and searching for evidence of water-ice. The Chang'e-7 mission, scheduled to launch on a Long March 5 rocket, will consist of an orbiter, lander, rover, and hopper spacecraft.
Mission Objectives
The mission is targeting the scientifically intriguing lunar south pole, focusing on key questions regarding the potential presence, volume, and accessibility of volatiles caught in shadowed craters. The Chang'e-7 mission is intended to lay the technical groundwork for China's planned International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), with the follow-on Chang'e-8 mission planned for around 2029.
Precision Landing and Drilling
The Chang'e-7 lander will attempt a precise landing with a sub-100 meter ellipse, targeting a feature known as the Peak Near Shackleton. The propellant-powered hopper spacecraft is designed to make a series of flights into shadowed craters, where it will use a laser-based spectrometer to scan the surface for surface frost and preview whether the site is likely to yield water. A drill will then retrieve a soil sample from up to roughly a meter deep, which will be analyzed for water content and hydrogen-isotope signature.
Ambitious Science Payload
The orbiter, lander, and rover, as well as the supporting Queqiao-2 relay satellite, carry a range of science payloads, including a seismograph, topography and panoramic cameras, magnetometers and spectrometers, and a lunar penetrating radar. According to Katherine Joy, a professor of lunar and planetary science at the University of Manchester, the mission has the potential for a huge science return if it can successfully land at its intended landing site close to Shackleton crater.
The comparison of Chang'e-7's findings with those of other missions expected to explore the same region in the coming years, such as NASA's VIPER rover and ESA's PROSPECT drill, will be crucial in understanding the future human exploration potential of the south pole of the moon. China is aiming to land its first astronauts on the moon before 2030, and the Chang'e-7 mission is an important step towards achieving this goal.
The launch window for the Chang'e-7 mission is set to open around 8:00 p.m. Eastern on August 23, with the spacecraft entering an initial lunar orbit around five days later. The orbiter will then begin imaging target landing sites near the lunar south pole for a later landing attempt, with the lander and rover expected to operate for longer periods due to the carefully chosen landing site.
The Chang'e-7 mission is the latest in a series of Chang'e missions launched by China, starting in 2007, including orbiters, landers, and rovers. The sample return missions, such as the 2020 and 2024 Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 missions, have provided a validation of techniques such as launching from the lunar surface and docking in lunar orbit needed for human exploration of the moon.
