Blue Origin Wins $700M NASA Mars Communications Network
NASA has awarded Blue Origin a contract worth approximately $700 million to develop and build the new Mars Telecommunications Network.

NASA has selected Blue Origin to build a modern communications network for Mars, awarding a firm-fixed-price contract valued at roughly $700 million. The new Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN) will replace aging infrastructure and support future missions with high-bandwidth data and navigation services.
The contract requires Blue Origin to deliver the Mars orbiter to NASA by the end of 2028. This deadline was set by the July 2025 budget-reconciliation package that funds the mission. Blue Origin's role covers the spacecraft's entire lifespan, from design and development through launch and network operations.
The Blue Ring Platform
The company's proposal is built on its Blue Ring spacecraft platform. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated on X that the orbiter is already under production in Huntsville, Alabama. Blue Ring is described as a high-powered, highly maneuverable spacecraft capable of carrying over 1,000 kilograms to Mars orbit.
The orbiter is expected to be operational at Mars by 2030. Its primary functions will include transmitting science data and imagery, providing critical communications for spacecraft on and around Mars, and carrying a secondary payload. This secondary payload has a mass of 20 kilograms and can host either science instruments or deployable cubesats.
Ending a Public Competition
The award concludes a public competition for the contract. The budget-reconciliation bill limited bidding to the eight companies that participated in NASA's 2024 and 2025 commercial Mars sample return studies. NASA did not reveal which or how many companies ultimately bid.
Two contenders were notably public. Rocket Lab promoted its Explorer spacecraft platform, which is the backbone of its ESCAPADE mission to Mars with NASA. The company also highlighted its freedom from other major lunar commitments. Blue Origin, on its website, argued that "as much as 80 percent of our work to land on the Moon is directly applicable and reusable for the Red Planet." NASA did not provide a source-selection statement or specify why Blue Origin won.
Supporting a Growing Mars Presence
The contract serves as a sign that NASA continues to invest in Mars exploration alongside its lunar Artemis program. The current communications hardware used at Mars predates technologies like the iPhone and 4G networks. The new MTN system will be managed by NASA's Space Communications and Navigation program.
It is designed to support an anticipated increase in the number of missions to the Red Planet and their growing data demands. The network will provide essential services for both current and future spacecraft operating on the Martian surface and in orbit.
