ESA Awards €760M Cargo Contract to The Exploration Company

The European Space Agency has awarded a €760 million contract to The Exploration Company for its commercial cargo spacecraft. The deal, announced on 10 September, covers an initial demonstration mission to the International Space Station and includes options for two additional service flights.

According to the agency, the contract forms part of its Autonomous LEO Accelerated Demo Docking to ISS Node (ALADDIN) initiative. ESA Director for Human and Robotic Exploration Daniel Neuenschwander said the award gets "Europe one step closer to developing a key capability which only a handful of nations have mastered."

Contract Structure and Funding

The €760 million total is split into two parts. A sum of €310 million is allocated for the initial demonstration mission. The remaining €450 million covers optional service missions, which could target either the ISS or a future commercial station.

ESA stated that The Exploration Company secured the Phase 2 contract after meeting key technical readiness milestones. Crucially, the company secured private investment covering 40% of the financing required for the Nyx demo. ESA will provide the remaining 60%. Earlier this week, TEC announced it closed a $450 million Series C funding round.

CEO Hélène Huby highlighted the significance. "It is also the first time in Europe that a five-year-old space startup wins a contract worth hundreds of millions of euros in open competition," she said.

The Nyx Demonstration Mission

The demonstration mission for TEC's Nyx spacecraft has a firm deadline. It must dock with the ISS no later than the second quarter of 2029. This is the final window available to ESA before the station's planned retirement.

The mission will launch aboard an Ariane 6 rocket. This vehicle choice makes the mission eligible for an additional ESA incentive worth up to €50 million. The agency introduced this incentive to encourage the use of European launch vehicles.

Maintaining Market Competition

ESA emphasized its commitment to maintaining competition in the emerging European commercial cargo sector. The Exploration Company and Thales Alenia Space Italy both previously received Phase 1 contracts under the ALADDIN program.

While TEC has now secured the first Phase 2 award, the agency stated it is continuing a second-stage tendering process with Thales Alenia Space. This suggests the possibility of a future contract for a second service provider.

The Exploration Company was founded in 2021. With this new contract and its recent Series C round, the company's total secured funding now stands at approximately $680 million. Huby noted the development of Nyx began with private funding alone, reaching a maturity where public funding can act as an anchor.
