Helogen has scheduled two missions for its HEL-IOS biomaterials manufacturing platform for October. Both will launch on separate SpaceX vehicles. These are the first full flights of the complete platform.

For the first mission, Helogen will fly HEL-IOS on an unannounced reentry vehicle. The goal is to develop polymers for orthopedic applications. After the mission, the company plans to recover the manufactured biomaterials for further study.

The second mission is a partnership with LambdaVision. It will involve an in-orbit demonstration of HEL-IOS on a D-Orbit spacecraft. This flight aims to prove the creation of proteins for artificial retinas in space.

Mission Strategy and Goals

Helogen's October missions advance the company toward in-space biological manufacturing at scale. They also help progress toward regulatory approval for using space-made materials in terrestrial medical procedures. CEO Shishir Bankapur told Payload that maintaining sterility and ensuring traceability are critical. "Just like the ice cream analogy: You want to know whether your ice cream was transported frozen throughout its journey to your grocery store," he said.

While many companies focus on space-based drug production, Helogen is targeting surgical implants. Bankapur believes this is a more immediately achievable goal. The company aims to create biopolymers for use as scaffolding in orthopedic surgeries. Examples include shoulder-rotator-cuff or knee-meniscus repairs. Helogen expects its space-manufactured biopolymers will be denser and longer-lasting than current terrestrial alternatives.

Platform and Business Model

The HEL-IOS platform is modular. Customers can select specific aspects for their space missions. It was one of ten projects to win NASA's TechLeap prize last year. Helogen offers it as a testbed and future production hub for other companies interested in space-based biomaterial manufacturing.

October's missions are just the beginning. Helogen plans to fly eight missions within the next 12 months. According to Bankapur, most will focus on internal product development. The remainder will be dedicated to customer-funded R&D.

Both mission types generate revenue. Customer-led flights, where other companies use the HEL-IOS platform, offer larger margins. Internal missions allow Helogen to sell the space-manufactured materials after recovery. They also collect early deposits and R&D fees.

Future Outlook

Helogen anticipates that internal missions will eventually outperform customer-led flights. This shift will occur when the company can produce material at higher volumes. It will also begin selling directly to medical practices instead of just researchers. However, the company intends to maintain a mix of both mission types for the foreseeable future.

Bankapur explained the rationale for this dual approach. "Very early on, one of the things that we realized is we'll not have all the good ideas in the world," he said. The CEO stated a desire to be an integral part in commercializing the potential of space. He does not want to be just a manufacturer.
