The FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C satellites are now enclosed within the protective fairing of their Vega-C rocket at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. This encapsulation marks a key transition after over six weeks of preparation, bringing the dual-satellite mission closer to its scheduled departure on 15 September at 03:21 CEST (14 September at 22:21 local time).

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the delicate encapsulation process required great precision. FLEX was first secured within the lower part of the Vespa secondary payload adapter, a system enabling multiple satellite deployments. Sentinel-3C was then mated to the adapter's upper section, a positioning that allows it to be deployed first after the rocket lifts off. With both satellites in place, the two halves of the Vega-C's fairing were brought together and sealed.

The fairing forms a protective shell around the entire payload stack. It shields the satellites from the intense acoustic environment, vibrations, and aerodynamic forces generated as the Vega-C rocket accelerates through Earth's atmosphere.

Mission Profiles and Payloads

Beneath the fairing are two satellites with distinct but complementary scientific missions. FLEX, or the Fluorescence Explorer, is ESA's next Earth Explorer mission. It is designed to detect the faint glow of fluorescence emitted by plants during photosynthesis, a phenomenon invisible to the naked eye.

Equipped with a Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer, FLEX will measure this weak signal from orbit. Since fluorescence varies with plant health, the data will provide new global-scale insights into photosynthetic activity and vegetation stress. The mission is expected to produce global maps of vegetation fluorescence at a resolution of 300 by 300 metres.

Sentinel-3C is the third satellite in the Copernicus Sentinel-3 series. It will continue systematic monitoring of Earth's oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere. Its instrument suite will measure sea-surface temperature, ocean colour, sea level, and sea-ice characteristics. These observations also support vegetation monitoring, wildfire tracking, and measurements of inland water height and ice sheet variation.

The Vega-C Launch Vehicle

The mission will ride to orbit on Europe's Vega-C rocket. The vehicle can send a payload of up to 2300 kg into space. On the launch pad, it weighs 210 tonnes.

Vega-C reaches orbit using three solid-propellant-powered stages. A fourth liquid-propellant stage then takes over for the precise placement of satellites into their desired orbits. ESA leads the Vega-C programme, working with Avio as the prime contractor and design authority. For this specific mission, Avio is also the launch service operator.

Final Preparations for Liftoff

The next major step involves hoisting the encapsulated fairing, containing both satellites, into position atop the Vega-C rocket on the launch pad. This mission highlights Europe's versatile and independent access to space, with the Vega-C rocket complementing the larger Ariane family. The teams responsible for designing, building, and testing the satellites have now seen years of work encapsulated for their journey into orbit.
