Blue Origin Wins $700 Million NASA Mars Telecom Contract
NASA awarded Blue Origin up to $700 million to build a Mars telecom orbiter by 2028 to support future missions.

NASA has awarded Blue Origin a contract valued at up to $700 million. The goal is to construct the Mars Telecommunications Network. This system will provide critical communications and navigation services for future robotic and human missions to Mars.
Under the firm-fixed-price award announced on Tuesday, Blue Origin is responsible for the complete lifecycle of the spacecraft. The company will design, develop, integrate, launch, and operate the orbiter. Its primary function is clear. It will relay science data, imagery, navigation information, and mission communications between Mars and Earth.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO) will be built on the company's Blue Ring spacecraft platform. This platform is currently in production in Huntsville, Alabama. Blue Ring is a space logistics vehicle. It uses a hybrid solar electric and chemical (SEP-Chem) propulsion system.
The Contract and Timeline
The contract mandates delivery to NASA by December 31, 2028. NASA expects the complete Mars Telecommunications Network to be operational at the Red Planet by 2030. In a statement, Blue Origin said the network will provide near-continuous communications.
Limp framed the project as essential infrastructure. "Before the first human steps on Mars, we have to build the road," he said. He expressed honor at being selected for this mission.
Competitive Landscape
The award did not come without competition. Rocket Lab was vocal about its ambitions to secure the contract. The company proposed a design based on its own Explorer spacecraft platform.
Vehicle and Payload Details
The core of the mission is the Blue Ring spacecraft. It will serve as the foundation for the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter. Its hybrid propulsion system offers flexibility for the journey and orbital operations. The primary payload is the telecommunications hardware for the relay network. It will handle data from surface rovers, landers, and orbiting craft.
