Isar Aerospace's Spectrum Rocket Reaches Orbit on First
Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket from Norway, deploying five CubeSats. This marks the first privately funded European orbital launch and the first orbital launch from continental Europe.
German launch provider Isar Aerospace has successfully completed the inaugural flight of its Spectrum rocket. The vehicle lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway at 20:12 UTC on 5 September, deploying five CubeSats into low Earth orbit.
This mission represents a dual milestone for European spaceflight. It is the first time a privately funded European rocket has reached orbit. It also marks the first successful orbital launch conducted from continental Europe.
Flight Profile and Deployment
The mission's live broadcast concluded 18 minutes after liftoff following a planned loss of signal from the rocket's onboard cameras. Prior to that, spectators observed key flight events. Stage separation, upper-stage ignition, fairing deployment, and upper-stage engine cutoff all proceeded successfully. Final updates were provided via the company's official social media account.
Isar Aerospace confirmed the successful deployment of all five customer CubeSats at 10:14 UTC the following day, after a circularisation burn was completed.
Leadership Reaction
Company CEO Daniel Metzler framed the achievement as a rapid acceleration of European capability. "We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before," Metzler stated. He declared that the success provides Europe with sovereign access to space and opens a new chapter for the region's spaceflight ambitions.
Metzler added that the team's focus will now shift to scaling rocket production, fulfilling existing orders, and meeting rising global demand for launch services.
Path to the Launch Pad
The successful second Spectrum flight campaign followed a series of scrubbed attempts earlier in the year. The launch faced multiple technical and operational hurdles.
Ramping Up Production
With the qualification flight now complete, Isar Aerospace is transitioning to operational missions. In January, the company reported its next five Spectrum rockets were already in various stages of production. A new headquarters facility, where production is "starting," is designed to eventually support the manufacture of up to 40 rockets annually.
This expansion in manufacturing capacity and the practice of preparing multiple flights in advance are aimed at addressing the company's growing order backlog. The focus is now on moving from development to regular service.
