Vast Launches Lunar Programs Division for NASA Moon Base
Space infrastructure company Vast has established a new Lunar Programs division to support NASA's Moon Base ambitions, leveraging its work on commercial

Space infrastructure company Vast has announced the formation of a new Lunar Programs division. The company aims to leverage its manufacturing and technical expertise to support NASA's goal of establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon.
Vast CEO Max Haot stated the company possesses the necessary capability for the task. "Vast has the manufacturing capability, flight heritage, and technical expertise needed to help build humanity’s first lunar outpost," Haot said. The company plans to vertically integrate engineering, manufacturing, and testing to meet what it calls a national imperative with speed and safety.
A Phased Lunar Architecture
Vast's approach mirrors NASA's iterative strategy for the Moon Base. The company has outlined a three-phase plan for deploying its lunar infrastructure.
| Phase | Primary Goal | Key Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Establish Reliable Surface Access | Deploy foundational infrastructure and conduct technology demonstrations to reduce future risk. |
| 2 | Build Initial Base Operations | Introduce permanent surface elements for critical habitation technologies and crewed systems. |
| 3 | Enable Enduring Crewed Presence | Deploy the infrastructure required for long-duration lunar operations. |
Technology Transfer from Haven
The company reports that many technologies developed for its Haven commercial space station can be adapted for the Moon. Officials hope that, like the evolving Haven modules, its lunar habitats will benefit from continuous upgrades.
Key technologies under development include a dedicated lunar power station for solar generation and distribution. Vast also plans a Haven-derived, free-standing lunar airlock. This component is designed to tackle challenges like dust mitigation, pressure-vessel reliability, and suit compatibility.
The central element is a multi-module lunar habitat for long-duration crew stays. Its design encompasses life support, thermal control, avionics, communications systems, and consumables storage.
Communications and Navigation Constellation
Vast's lunar vision extends beyond surface hardware. The company recognizes that surface assets require robust links to Earth and other lunar systems.
Its plans include a proposed communications and positioning satellite constellation. This network would provide continuous coverage of the lunar south pole and enhance space situational awareness for orbital and surface operations. Vast states the constellation would complement NASA's planned Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Systems. It would also reduce reliance on shared assets like the Deep Space Network. The architecture is designed to scale by adding orbital planes as lunar activity expands.
The new division will build upon Vast's existing work in commercial space stations and satellite development.
